Le rayonnement de Simon-Pierre Nothomb ne cesse pas avec la soudaine et cruelle disparition du grand homme qu’il a été. Son fervent engagement au service des causes les plus nobles nous enjoint à la relève et sa confiance virile dans le futur nous interdit de douter. C’est l’honneur de l’esprit européen, dont toute son œuvre témoigne, qu’il nous faut transmettre après lui aux générations qui viennent.

As the Representative of NUI Galway on the Coimbra Group 1986-2011, I greatly admired Simon-Pierre as a true visionary, brimming with ideas for innovative ventures with a strong European focus. He had a great love for Ireland, too, in the context of his enthusiasm for and dedication to the variety in the EU linguistic and cultural fabric. He also came up with the idea of developing Circulos Europeos among the graduates of Coimbra Group Universities now living in South America, and it was he, with EU funding which he succeeded in attracting, set up several of those, thereby establishing a network of influential contacts between South America and the EU. His simple idea was to encourage South America to look east to Europe rather than north, as a more natural and historically congenial alliance. Trócaire Dé dá anam.

J'ai eu le plaisir et surtout l'honneur de travailler pour M. Nothomb alors qu'il était secrétaire général du Comité économique et social européen. Je lui dois énormément. C'est grâce à lui que j'ai pu poursuivre la voie que je souhaitais emprunter pour l'avenir. Je lui en serai éternellement reconnaissant.
L'annonce de son décès m'attriste tout particulièrement et j'ai d'abord été incrédule.
Un homme admirable, énergique, fonceur, esthète et poète. J'aimais son style à la fois sophistiqué et naturel, ses remarques incisives propres aux esprits vifs.
Je le respectais. Je le respecte. Difficile de croire qu'il n'est plus alors qu'il m'a toujours paru être un roc. Il m'a marqué.
Mon profonde amitié et ma compassion vont à ses proches.

On behalf of NUI Galway (Ireland), I send my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Baron Simon-Pierre Nothomb. His work with the Coimbra Group forged and developed the strong links we enjoy across Europe today. Mes sincères condoléances à sa famille, ses amis et ses collègues.
